What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a diffuse red rash that spreads over the face. It is more common as one ages because cumulative environmental and sun exposure and other factors damage the blood vessels in the skin.
Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea
The main sign of rosacea is a flushing or a red rash spreading across the center of the face, covering the nose and other areas. Rosacea can also cause the skin to feel hot and painful, and the skin on the nose may appear thick and swollen. It can also present with pimples on the face.
Risk Factors for Rosacea
Rosacea affects both adults and seniors, and the risk of developing rosacea increases if you are over 30. Women and fair-skinned individuals have a higher risk of developing rosacea. Smoking and having a family history of rosacea are additional risk factors.
Rosacea Triggers
Rosacea can worsen with certain triggers, including:
- Eating spicy, hot foods
- Drinking hot beverages
- Drinking alcohol
- Exposure to temperature extremes or wind
Treatment of Rosacea
Your dermatologist may recommend several treatment options to help you get relief from skin irritation and redness caused by rosacea. Common treatment options include:

- Medications including antibiotics
- Topical medications to address redness and inflammation

Steps to Prevent Rosacea
There are several important steps you can take to help prevent rosacea. You should:
- Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30,
- Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 if you have fair skin, freckles, or you sunburn easily
- Try to stay out of the direct sun between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM, when UV rays are most intense
