Eczema

Types of Eczema

Eczema is a common skin condition and includes several types:

  • Atopic dermatitis, caused by skin contact with toxic substances
  • Allergic contact dermatitis, caused by skin contact with an allergen such as poison ivy
  • Seborrheic dermatitis, caused by an overgrowth of a certain type of yeast

Common Signs and Symptoms of Eczema

Depending on the type of eczema, common signs and symptoms include:

  • Reddish-brown patches on the face, scalp, chest, knees, elbows, hands, feet, or ankles
  • Chronic, severe itching which can worsen at night
  • Swollen, inflamed, red, or raw areas of skin
  • Dry, cracked, scaly patches of skin
  • Bumps appearing on your skin which can drain fluid and crust over
  • Oily patches of skin and dandruff

What Can Trigger an Eczema Outbreak

You may experience an outbreak of eczema from exposure to an allergen, extreme temperatures, humidity, or dry weather. Hot or salt water can also trigger an eczema outbreak. Bacteria on the surface of the skin can also trigger eczema.

Steps You Can Take to Relieve Mild Eczema Symptoms

You may be able to get relief from mild eczema symptoms if you try:

  • Moisturizing daily after bathing/showers
  • Avoiding long hot showers
  • Placing a humidifier in your home during winter months
  • Applying petroleum jelly to rough dry spots
  • Using only fragrance free skin care products
